Open Call: Autmnus Vanitas - Fall 2026

Curatorial theme: The shadow of the equinox

In celebration of the autumn equinox, we're opening a call for submissions for Autumnus Vanitas, a curated group exhibition of contemporary Canadian ceramics opening at Poterie Foster on September 26th.

The equinox is the threshold where the light begins to fade and shadows lengthen — a natural change that mirrors the long tradition of vanitas: skulls beside fading flowers, fruit at the edge of ripeness, the eerie stillness of things left behind. For this exhibition, we're inviting ceramic artists to lean into the more enigmatic register of that tradition — surfaces that feel unearthed, forms that hold a residue of time, the haunting beauty of the macabre.

We are seeking ceramic works that investigate the thinning of the veil both conceptually and materially: surfaces that feel unearthed, forms that hold a residue of time, textures that register decay or absence. How does the permanence of fired clay sit alongside our own transience? What does it mean to create something fragile in a medium that outlasts us? We welcome submissions that embrace the atmospheric mystery of the season — a touch of the uncanny, the supernatural, the half-remembered.

Call for Projects

Centre Poterie Foster invites artists to submit exhibition projects for our upcoming programming. We support innovative ceramic practices from emerging and established artists that explore various shapes, colors, and firing techniques. We are seeking proposals that treat clay as a primary vehicle for artistic expression, moving beyond pure utility to celebrate the "maker" spirit and hand-hewn textures.
